PDF retrieve metadata: how long should I wait??

Usually, when I use the retrieve metadata tool I get a result right away. Sometimes, however, I wait awhile -- 20-30 seconds -- and then, with no result, I cancel the process. Should I wait longer before giving up? Is there an automatic time-out after a certain length of time?

    The PDF retrieve metadata functionality is still very much underspecified UI-wise. It can hang indefinitely for no discernible reason, doesn't have an option to skip after a user-settable timeout, etc.

    For references, here is an old thread with a handful of simple suggestions for UI improvement that were never taken up.

    Perhaps, those things from thread 8073 should be added to the Papercuts list. I'll add them soon.
