Bibliography in document?

I've written my dissertation in individual word documents for each chapter. When I copy-paste everything into one document, it seems the zotero codes dissapear? If I try to create a collected bibliography, I get, "You must insert a citaion first".

Am I missing something? How can I merge word documents and keep the citation codes?

    Your approach works in general.
    If you copy all chapters in to a new document, you need to first select a citation style for that document, either by inserting a random citation or by using "Set Document Preferences". Then pasting should work.
    (Alternatively, you can just past chapter 2,3,4 at the end of chapter 1)
