Can't start Zotero, screen blanks, FF freezes.

Hello, when I try to save a new item to my library, clicking on the Zotero icon in the status bar of FF caused the screen to blank and FF to cease responding.

I have FF 8.0.1 and just deleted and reinstalled Zotero but no joy. Zotero files are where they should be in my FF profile.

I have a recent backup of my hard drive so backup copy of data is not a problem.
  • Does this happen with any page? Does it happen if you create an item manually in Zotero?
  • Oh, status bar, not address bar. So this isn't actually related to saving, right? Just opening Zotero?
  • Yes, any page, Dan. Can't launch regardless of page displayed in FF at the time.

I can't open Zotero at all. Correct, nothing to do with saving after opening.
  • Generate debug output from Firefox start through the freeze, save it to a text file, and e-mail it to support@zot....org with a link to this thread.

(The debug output will also show you if Zotero is actually doing something. It's possible you just need to wait a bit longer.)
  • Did you adjust the scrollback buffer length, as explained on the linked page? The debug output you sent shows only a few lines.

And, again, if there's ongoing debug output it's quite likely that you just need to wait longer. An actual endless loop is extremely rare.
  • Sorry, Dan. I forgot to do that. Since corrected. Still the buffer appears to fill up and dump data. It sure looks like something got caught in a loop. No sarcasm.
  • Zotero is auto-emptying items in the trash older than 30 days. Most likely you deleted a huge number of items about 30 days ago. We're looking into ways to speed this up in future versions, but just give it time to finish. It's not actually frozen.

If you want, you can also go to about:config in the Firefox address bar (or via the Advanced pane of the Zotero prefs, depending on your Zotero version), search for extensions.zotero.trashAutoEmptyDays, and set it to 0. Then restart Firefox. Zotero should open, and you can delete smaller sets of items from the trash. Afterwards, reset trashAutoEmptyDays to 30.
  • Thanks, Dan. Full marks for top flight tech support. I did delete a bunch of file images.

I let it rip and eventually it was blues skies and buttercups in the Zotero department.
  • As always, I esp. appreciate how my question was instantly dealt with at all times.

It's the best I've ever seen.
