Rename data from parent metadata prevents opening pdf

I retrieved an article pdf from Science Direct, and dragged and dropped it to my Zotero library into an item.

The pdf opens as should when double clicking, however, when I rename it from parent metadata, the file is no longer opening.

When I checked "show file", the file exists, but is missing .pdf-extension in the file name. Original file name was science-11 without the .pdf-extension.
  • you're on Windows? On reason this happens is if something odd happens in the title in your metadata - how did you import that? If you copied and pasted it, could it have a new line (carriage return) in it? That would cause this problem (it's fixed for the next version).
  • I´m using mac. I first used the address bar button to create an item, then downloaded pdf separately, and then dragged and dropped the pdf-file on the item. After this I used the rename it from the metadata, but after that the file did not open anymore.
  • What I think happens here is that because the file does not have the .pdf file name extension, it is not recognized as a PDF file by the operating system. I think that Mac stores the mime type for the downloaded file so that it knows how to open it, but this is lost when the item is renamed.
