Android API Key Entry

In the Android App, when you install the app, then click the "Enter an API key manually" you get two edit boxes; One for your User ID and one for the API Key. By registering an account on-line you get both these two data items - note I used an alphabetic username.

However, you cannot enter an alphabetic User Id, as the edit box only accepts numbers and conversely the API Key defaults to accepting text! This is the wrong way round!!!!
  • note that Zandy, the Android app is not an official Zotero product. Its developer will likely come by here, but you should probably use the support channels (email and Twitter) suggested under "Getting Help" in the Zandy Manual:
    http://www.gimranov.com/avram/w/zandy-user-guide
  • This actually sounds like "Scanner for Zotero", since Zandy doesn't have a button like "Enter an API key manually".
  • in that case I don't even know if the developer will see this - so do JonLees, you should definitely try to contact him directly.
  • It is most likely referring to your userID and an api key you can generate at https://www.zotero.org/settings/keys (your numeric userID is at the top of that page as well).
  • I got the app from Android Market, but it won't open on my G1 running 1.6. Neither will it accept an API key manually. Any ideas?
  • Note that there are two android apps - you have to say which one you're trying to work with. Both have, afaik, emails for support, which would be the best way to get in touch. With Zandy it doesn't matter as much, because the developer is on this forum regularly. That's not the case for the scanner app, so for that you definitely want to e-mail.
  • Zandy doesn't support Android 1.6, so either you're dearling with the Scanner app, or something went wrong with the market and it let you download an incompatible app.
  • Thanks fcheslack, your comments helped get me sorted!

The userID you need to enter in the Android App is NOT your zotero userid as you would expect, but in fact it is the numeric userID quietly sitting at the top of the page where you get your API key, i.e. https://www.zotero.org/settings/keys

    Thanks for your help.
  • Thanks all. Yes, it was the Scanner, and it does appear that the Market failed me, as the app is described as compatible with Android 1.6. I just hope the developer is a good guy, so I don't feel bad for being taken for $2.
  • Carol - write to the dev, please - he should fix that if it is marked as compatible incorrectly and he should know about other errors. Again, this is _not_ the place to get support for the Android Scanner app, it could very well be that there's something trivial that you're doing wrong and we wouldn't know.
  • Actually, the Scanner app is supposed to be 1.6-compatible; there's a commit in the source repository that was intended precisely to add compatibility with Android 1.6+ (it was previously 2.2+, like Zandy). But definitely get in touch with the dev on this.
