Reference Manager to Zotero

Hey Community,

i got a pretty big Problem with the import from Refman to Zotero.
First of all I got a pretty sizeable Database with more then 9000 entrys in it. So I chopped it in smaller Pieces that Zotero can Import the exported RIS Data file from Refman.

Now the Problems are kicking in.

1) I am German so some Articles use Special Characters like ä /ö /ü / ß they are displayed as " / „ /
Example: Lebensqualit„t fr Kinder

2) The Links to some PDF´s got some strange Symbols like :

I did some research and found some Threads about this Topic but I am not an expert with programming so I really pray to god that some of you got a simple solution for my Problem.

Sincerely yours

Stefan
  • sounds like a file encoding issue. You'll want to convert your text files to unicode (UTF-8) prior to importing - someone else may have specific instructions, but the easiest might be just to google how to do this for your operating system.
  • I have a related question: I have currently ~10,000 entries in Mendeley, which I would like to migrate to Zotero. Last time I tried Zotero (about a year ago), Zotero was not able to sync such a database (confirmed by one of the developers), althoug it was less than 100MB in size at the time, because I had few pdfs in it. Now my database is even larger, and I would need to buy additional storage space, but before I do so, I would like to be certain that Zotero can actually handle 10,000 entries now.

    Many thanks for any feedback!

    Matthias
  • Matthias - in general, start a new thread if you don't have exactly the same issue as the original poster.
As for your question, just try it out - data syncing is free in Zotero regardless of the size of the db, you only pay for file storage (you can disable file syncing). Follow up on a new thread if necessary.
