Style Error: Gut

There are some errors in the style for this high-impact medical journal (>10IF):
In the text:
- Citation in the text in square brackets
In the reference list:
- no dots after the consectutive numbering in the reference list
example: 22 Surname AB, Surname CD. Article title. Journal abbreviation. Year;Vol:Start page-End page
- journal title in italic
- list the names and initials of all authors if there are 3 or fewer; otherwise list the first 3 and add et al. (at the moment, six authors are listed)
- doi should be added after the page numbers

example references:
1 Vole P, Smith H, Brown N, et al. Treatments for malaria: randomised controlled trial. Ann Rheum Dis 2003;327:765-8 doi:10.1136/ard.2003.001234 [published Online First: 5 February 2004].

Could somebody re-edit it? Many thanks in advance!
  • Hi. I finally got to this. You can find the style call BMJ Vancouver here
    https://github.com/citation-style-language/styles/raw/master/bmj-vancouver.csl
download by right-click --> save link as... Install by dragging to any open FF window.
I did some extra stuff, such as correct paging, et al in italics etc. let me know how it looks.
  • Thank you very much for your support. When I use the citation style with OpenOffice (3.2.1., Mac OS), I found some format errors:
    1. there is a missing blank between <journal title> and <publication year>
    2. besides <publication year>, also <month> and <day> is indicated - this should be left out
    3. there is a "dot" between <pages> and <doi>. If <doi> is indicated, this "dot" should be after the <doi>; conseqently, when no <doi> is indicated, the citation ends with a dot after <pages>. Refering to current GUT publications, <doi> is mainly left out (although the journal requests that "the DOI should ideally be included in the citation even if you want to cite a print version of an article". Therefore, I wonder if one shoud indicate it or just left it of if it makes problems to place this "final dot".

Again, I really appreciate your efforts.
  • OK, thanks for testing. A fixed version is up. I fixed 1. and 2.
For 3., it's now only printing a doi when no pages are given in the record (i.e. presumably for advanced or digital-only publication) For those cases it does put a period before the doi in accordance with the style guide:

    1. Alwick K, Vronken M, de Mos T, et al. Cardiac risk factors: prospective cohort study. Ann Rheum Dis Published Online First: 5 February 2004. doi:10.1136/ard.2003.001234

(note that they also give the full date here - I could get Zotero to do that if there are no pages or if there's no volume - would either of those make sense?)
  • Now, it looks perfect in the manuscript. Thanks a lot. Concerning doi, the output format still has a "dot" between <publication date> and <doi>, and not after the <doi> - at least in my testing. In reference to your last point, I think, both make sense (if no pages nor volume indicated).
Do you deposit it at zotero´s style repository?

Would you like to be acknowledged in the next publiction for your contribution?

Would you like to be acknowledged in the next publiction for your contribution?
    No Gut, no glory!
  • :-) thanks JMaul - no need to acknowledge this in your publication. What you could do is point out to the editors that this style exists and ask them to consider linking to it from their homepage.

I'll see when I get to the date issue - doesn't seem to be super urgent, so I'll push it down my list of priorities - as noted above, the period between publication year and doi is on purpose following my interpretation of the styleguide.

Finally, no, this won't go into the general Zotero repository - the style is in csl 1.0, which shows up in the repository as invalid - in the medium - if not short - run the entire repository will move to citationstyles.org
  • OK, I've added the full date for online first publication - here's the commit message which should be self explanatory.

"BMJ - Vancouver - add full date and "Published online first" to journal articles without page and volume and with doi or URL."
  • Hi adamsmith - thanks for the style for the BMJ Group journals (this one isn't just for Gut!) Could you modify it a little bit to include the DOI even if page and volume is included?

    From their guidance:
    http://group.bmj.com/products/journals/instructions-for-authors/formatting#references

"The DOI is a permanent identifier of all versions of an article, whether raw manuscript or edited proof, online or in print. Thus the DOI should ideally be included in the citation even if you want to cite a print version of an article."

Also, is there any reason why there is a separate "British Medical Journal" style in Zotero? It's a bit confusing to guess which one to use!
  • the existence of the British Medical Journal style is a relic from the time before the BMJ style - I'll take it off when I get a chance.

I won't add the DOIs to articles unless someone has corresponded with BMJ editors about this. If you look at published articles, as discussed above, DOIs are not added to all journal articles, contrary to what the style guide says.
