Multiple sources and "undefined" between them [no.]undefined[no.]

Hi, I am having problems with multiple source citations in my thesis using Zotero. I am using Firefox 7.0.1 and Openoffice 3.1.1 with Zotero 2.1.10 and Zotero Openoffice integration 3.5b1. I am saving my files in .odt format

I am not sure why I have this problem and I do not have a background in computers.

I got a Report Error id:560402392
  • Oh yeah I am saving the references in Angew. Chimie format
  • Oh and the problem is:

When I enter multiple source citations, instead of having [1],[2],[3] or [1]-[14] I get [1]undefined[2]undefined[3] etc.
  • Which citation style you are using?
  • Angewandte Chemie (provisional)
  • Does it happen with other styles?
  • Yes,however it now enters a question mark instead of "undefined". I have installed updates for different Chemistry styles. For instance Royal Society of Chemistry now appears as "1?5"
  • It seems to be working fine now. I installed the latest Angewandte Chemie (provisional) style. I am not sure if this is what fixed it, but Im very happy my citations now look normal.
  • probably that fixed it, yes - in some very rare cases a style will get corrupted in Zotero, usually re-installing it fixes things.
  • I am having a similar problem today. Instead of undefined, I now have a ? inbetween. For example [1?5]
  • Actually I have the undefined problem again as well. Seems to be everytime i re-open the document
  • This is very annoying, everytime I reopen the document this mess occurs...im meant to be handing in my thesis this week and im fed up having to click "edit citation" for each of my citations to fix it. As a result I cant actually progress with my work. Should have used Endnote
  • Ok I managed to get rid of the undefined again by clicking edit citation. So citations are now [1,2] However for citations [1-5] etc it is coming up as [1?5]. I do not know how to get replace the ? for -
  • As far as I know, this was fixed some time ago. If your deadline is pressing, you're probably best off finishing the manuscript, making a submission copy, stripping Zotero codes in the copy, and fixing up the bad delimiters with find and replace.

We haven't had any other recent reports of this behavior. When did it start occurring on your system?
  • I agree with fbennett - this seems like a problem specific to your computer. Another thing to try would be to reset styles from the advanced panel of the Zotero preferences and re-install the angewandte chemie style on the off chance that something corrupted the entire style directory.
  • ok i will try over the weekend...this is holding me back and I am trying to get the thesis in some decent form to hand it in this evening...with the comment that the corrections i will fix over the weekend.
  • As I mentioned before I did re-install the Angwandte style earlier in the week and this fixed the "undefined" problem. However not the "?" problem.

You say it was fixed some time ago? In what way? Can you tell me the solution/remedy of this?

    Thanks
  • I have followed those instructions, clicked reset styles, then reloaded the styles. This time I tried the Journal of American Chemical Society and that too has the same problem of inserting ?

So I am getting 1?5 with the three different chemistry styles I installed.

Anyone know how to fix it?
  • Ok I think I have finally figured it out.

When I am inserting citation, in Add Citation...after clicking multiple sources...I need to click "Show Editor" and double check that it insert 1-5
    And it inserts 1-5!!!

So far that seems the best solution...although I think there is still a proper solution needed to fix this problem from whoever developed the style to make sure its automatic.
  • As noted above, none of us have yet been able to reproduce the error, so we wouldn't know where to start on a fix. It's likely caused by some peculiarity of your local system. Very good to hear you have a workaround that works though.
