emptying trash

Hi there,

I'm trying to create more storage space and I have deleted files from my library. But when I try to right-click on the Trash icon/text to empty it, the option doesn't appear (I only get the usual options to 'Open Link in New Window' etc.) When I select items within the trash to delete I can only 'Move To Trash' and nothing happens.

Would much appreciate suggestions.

Bests,
Ieuan.
  • right-click on the trash.
  • But that's exactly what I'm trying to do and can't. Probably I'm missing something really obvious but I can't get any functionality from the website when I right-click on the trash. All I get is the conventional options if you right-click a link (such as Bookmark this link etc.)
  • It seems that you're trying to empty the trash online-- I don't know if that's possible at the moment, but you should be able to empty it using the Zotero client by right-clicking on the trash icon as adamsmith describes.
  • Ah that's it, thanks ajlyon (and adamsmith)! I was trying to do this online.
  • All
Following suggestions here (to rid myself of large trash on web) I emptied my LOCAL trash and then SYNC-ed. Still trash on web. No trash at all on local. Am I missing something?
  • Hi - I'm trying to empty my trash online as zotero won't open on my computer (as it's reached storage capacity). I can't seem to empty it though - any suggestions?

zotero won't open on my computer (as it's reached storage capacity)
cmarsham: That's not possible. Zotero opening and your file sync storage quota have no relation to one another. If you're having trouble, start a new thread and provide more information.
  • Dan, I am having a somewhat similar problem: I happened to import a large set of references from endnote into my library, and then deleted it. I also emptied my trash (local). But the online version shows the trash still contains all the deleted references, and zotero seems to keep wanting to sync and asks me to confirm which version to retain or something like that. Any suggestions?
  • Dan, further to my last post: The only thing that seemed to help was for me to delete permanently the references in the online trash folder. But since online one can only see a few refs at a time (25?), this is a slow process. Please suggest something else.
  • So, is there are a possibility to purge the trash online? It is very annoying to purge it by 25 items.
  • I am having the same problem. Is there any way of purging a large trash? Every time I try from local it crashes. I would probably need to delete 25 at a time online and this would take forever! Thanks.
  • locally, does it actually crash or does it just say "not responding"? If the latter, just click continue and let it run for a while.

Otherwise, locally you can delete larger chunks--say 100 items at a time--from the trash.
  • It will crash Mozilla Firefox. Tried to let it run numerous times. As for deleting 100 at a time I have to select each item individually as most entries contain an extra "entry" and if selected along with the citation will not allow for grouped deletion. This also means that I can only view 50 citations per page resulting in me having to select 50 lines per page, delete, and then repeat for 12,000 citations! Won't be doing that!
  • My guess would be that you're simply running out of memory in the process, which probably wasn't designed with such massive deletes in mind. You could try with nothing else running on the system.

To make sure I understand you right:
most entries contain an extra "entry" and if selected along with the citation will not allow for grouped deletion.
You mean they're grouped with an entry that's greyed out in the local trash? E.g. you deleted the attachment but not the top level item?

    Though this:
This also means that I can only view 50 citations per page resulting in me having to select 50 lines per page
doesn't apply locally, of course. I fear doing at least some of this bit by bit locally is still your best bet.
  • Tried deleting bunches at a time with success. Then for whatever reason the whole trash emptied. Yay! Whatever you did to help (if you did), thanks!
