MS Word plugin and Portable Firefox

Hello everybody,
I have a problem with the MS Word plugin which cannot communicate with Zotero despite the fact that Firefox is running (the portable version). I have a standard Firefox version on my computer with Zotero but the MS Word plugin is not activated. Maybe there is a conflict somewhere.

I have only found old discussions about this issue. It did not help. Can someone help me with this ?

My softwares versions:
Windows 7 Pro Service Pack 1
Portable Firefox 5.0
MS Word 2010 14.0.6106
Zotero 2.1.10
Zotero Winword Integration 3.1.2

Thank you in advance.
  • I believe I am having the same problem. When I try to add citations using the zotero button on MS Word it says that it is not communicating also.

    Software:
    OS Lion
    Firefox 7.0
    MS Word 14.1.3
    Zotero 2.1.10
    PythonExt
    Mac Plugin

If I install all of them they everything works just fine, but if I close word of firefox I need to reinstall them to work again.
  • Message to Shock-koon.
I believe I figured out how to fix our problem. Here are the steps I took to fix my problem.

    1. Open Firefox.
    2. Go to Tools (top of the screen) then add-ons.
    3. Click the "Extensions" tab
4.Make sure both Zotero 2.1.10, and Zotero MacWord Intergration 3.1.6 are activated, if they are there should be 3 options for it. Preferences, Disable, and Remove. You may need to restart Firefox to get them to activate, make sure you do so.
    5.Enjoy

Hopefully this works for you like it worked for me.

Thank you for you help. I use Windows 7 (I forgot to mention it so I edited my post). I tried reinstalling, I doesn't work.

The thing is, I think Word is making the confusion between Firefox and Portable Firefox. If I install Zotero and the word plugin on Firefox, it works just fine. When Firefox and Portable Firefox are running, Word communicates with Firefox.

I would like it to communicate with Portable Firefox instead. I need to move my Zotero between several computers. One possibility could be to synchronize zotero between Firefox, but there should be a way to make it work.
  • I learned of this program from a teacher of mine, she had it installed on multiple computers and a iPad, along with firefox of course, and she said it worked fine. It should automatically update itself and when you open it on a different computer it should work just fine. Atleast it works just fine for my teacher. As long as you click on the little sync button and but in your account info it should update any time you change anything. For instance, mine did when i added new books to it. I could even get on the site through safari and see the new books in my library (which i had added only 2 seconds ago).
  • If both Firefox and Portable Firefox are open simultaneously, or if you open Portable Firefox when Firefox is already open, I wouldn't expect things to work properly. You would need to use one or the other.

If you need to use your Zotero library on multiple computers and for whatever reason don't want to use sync (although this is what it's made for), you could also put the Zotero data directory on your flash drive instead of using Portable Firefox.
  • @ Simon
I tried to run only Portable Firefox (with Zotero desactivated of Firefox, just in case), it doesn't work either.

But you made me think about an idea. Is it possible to set Firefox's Zotero data directory to be the same as Portable Firefox's one? I suppose they have to be exactly the same version.

Anyway, if it doesn't work, I think I will go for sync.

Thank you both for your help.

I tried and it worked !

There is just an error message when two instances of Zotero are running on the same folder.

But I will about using sync as well, since my folder is "only" 70 Mo.

Have a nice day or night depending on your time zone.

PS: should I do something to say that it is solved ?
