Author fn/ln formatting & multiple authors in bibliography - multiple styles

I use Zotero standalone, entering citations manually, and then inserting citations with cite-as-you-write into MS-Word 2003.

I have entered some authors as firstname lastname, others as lastname, firstname, and still others as names of organizations (e.g. Government of Canada).

I enter each author into a new Zotero "Author" field.

In my MS-Word 2003 documents, I have created footnote/endnote type citations and bibliographies with several of the styles (e.g. APA 6, Chicago), and I notice two things:

(1) only the first author name appears

(2) the first author name appears verbatim (i) in whatever order I typed it into the "Author" field in Zotero, and (ii) always including the first name or initials, i.e. even in the APA 6 in-text citation.

As a reference point - I used to use EndNote, which has its own conventions for these things, and I used it successfully.

What am I missing?
  • you want all authors entered as lastname, firstname in the separate fields (i.e. you can switch between firstname and lastname using tab) and all corporate authors in single field mode (click on the little one-field icon next to the name) - that way everything should work.

Are you entering the personal names in single-field mode?

(Edit: adamsmith beat me to the punch.)
  • It seems to me that single-field mode keeps auto-switching back to double-field mode, and I have to keep switching back. Is there a master Settings control I can use to keep the mode stable?
  • the mode is stable and defaults to two field. From your other post I gather that you're importing from a library catalogue, which may well be the issue. Note that you do not want to use single field mode for personal authors - it is for corporate authors.
  • Oh, thank you so much. I'm on track now!
