"cited by" in vancouver style

According to this site:

http://www.library.auckland.ac.nz/subject-guides/med/setref-vancouver.htm#cited%20by

i need to write "cited by" and then my paper, when i was not able to read the orignal.

My problem is to get this that way in my bibliography! it would be the best to create a citation of the original and write "cited by: blablabla" in the extra field, for example. BUT this is not shown in the bibliography in my citation style! When i write this info directly in the bibliografy, it's lost everytime i refresh the doc, when i hit the edit bibliography button, my entry would not be refreshed in case of changes in the doc.....

ANY SOLUTIONS? Would be great!

Thanks!

it's not that hard to add the content of the extra field at the end of a bibliography entry - just add
    <text variable="note" prefix="(cited by: " suffix=")"/>
at the end of the bibliography section of the style - see here for general instructions:
    http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/citation_styles/style_editing_step-by-step
otherwise, just edit this at the end - you could add a marker e.g. to the title of the citation to remind you.

FWIW, I believe that in actual medical publications, cited by references are strongly frowned upon, as they have been the source of some widely propagated errors in the past.

edit: I just see that the librarians point out that Vancouver doesn't actually allow this, so really, do make every effort to get your hands on the original.

    hi adam!

Thanks for your comment! i will try your suggestions!

i have to write my diploma in medicine but there are some pages about the history of my topic. i don't have any chances to get that much historic books - so far it's my only chance to do it this way.

where did you see the comment on librarians and vancouver?

  • From the link you provided above:
"Note that the authors of the Vancouver style do not allow this type of reference, and so do not give any examples of it. The example below has been provided by library staff."

Don't underestimate the amount of books that have been scanned into google books. Especially if you know what's on a page you can find an astonishing amount of stuff.
  • yes i was searching google books over and over. another option is to cite the original, altough never reading it. woudn't it be better the other way?
