Footnotes in Word 10 - cannot add a citation to a comment

I am a new user. I'm using the plug-in for Word 10. I've got in-text citations with a bibliography at the end of the document. However, I use footnotes to make additional comments or side notes about the text. I am not able to include an in-text citation in the footnote. I get the message:

"Zotero fields cannot be inserted here"

Any ideas on what I can do to resolve this issue?

    Make sure that "Fields" are selected in the Zotero Document Preferences. Bookmarks can't be inserted into footnotes.

    Thanks! Changing to "Fields" from "Bookmarks" did the trick!

    However, now it looks like it's not compatible with OpenOffice? I'm working in Word, but others using OpenOffice are likely to read the document. Will OpenOffice viewers still be able to see the citations, but just not change them? Or will OpenOffice viewers not be able to see the citations at all?

    OpenOffice users can see the citations, but can't change them.
