This might sound like a ridiculous question but is the free Zotero version downloaded to the desktop backed up anywhere on a Zotero cloud?

There's only a free version of Zotero, and it supports syncing. If you have more than 300 MB of files, you'll need to subscribe to a storage plan to store additional files on Zotero servers.
