Every time I try to paste a link into the red bar where you add citations, it freezes. I hit enter after inserting the link and no citation is created. Any solution as to how to get this to work"

It shouldn't freeze (unless your library is very big and it's searching), but you don't paste a link into the citation dialog — you search for items in your Zotero library by title, author, or date.
