    Maybe there is a way to get around this. Since I like to have my references in Bookends, I expect I'll be exporting from Zotero to Bookends periodically. Unless there is a way to distinguish what's been exported, I'll have to export the whole library and then remove the duplicates in Bookends. That's not too big a deal, but I wonder if it's possible to be able to export only references since the last export.

    I don't think there's any automatic way to do it, but would it work if you sorted by date added (to display the field, click the field selector dropdown on the far right of the middle pane) and then selected all the references added since your last export? You'd have to remember that date yourself, but it seems like a simple work-around for the time being.

    That's a good idea, thanks. I haven't really figured out what my workflow using Zotero will be, so it may not even be an issue.
