Chrome Extension failure

Zotero won't allow me to utilize the Chrome extension for certain PDFs. The extension button comes up as a blank grey sheet in the corner of my browser.

  • Can you provide an example URL where this happens?
  • I have the same problem. There used to be a "Save to Zotero" button you could save, which I had on my toolbar. Somehow that disappeared and I also only see a blank grey sheet where my extensions are....
  • An example would be when I download a PDF to my browser...the corresponding URL example would be:

    file:///Users/isabellelegare/Downloads/chemical-risk-assessment%20(1).pdf
  • the extension won't work on file URIs: you can just drag files from your hard disk to Zotero.

Does it work for web URLs? Something like https://media.rff.org/documents/RFF-DP-96-36.pdf
  • Yes - it works for that example URL.
  • Right, so if you've already downloaded a file to your computer, you would add it to Zotero just by dragging it in.

When you're actually previewing a PDF in your browser — which would be the default setting/situation — at an http(s) address you can use the Save to Zotero button to save it directly.
  • OK, so whenever you see file:/// at the start of the URL, that file is on your harddisk and you can't import it to Zotero from your browser. If you find Zotero to show a grey icon on a page where you'd expect it to work (it will show this on unsupported pages) run through https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues and post the information requested in the last step.
  • This makes sense...thank you for the clarification!
