add citation in a word file already having some citation

Can we add citation in a word file already having some citation but not created by us...i.e. in a collaboration work where other author has added there part and we want to add in between so that number will change automatically.

If the citations in the Word doc were created with Zotero or Mendeley, yes, though you won't be able to edit metadata for any existing items.
