Sent document to someone and the reference fields include extra information

When I emailed my document (both with linked and unlinked citations), the in-text citations (Nature style) populate with extraneous information imbedded in the content, making the document difficult to read. I am wondering if there is something on my end I can do to prevent this from happening or if he needs to change something?
