In-text/Inline citation modification

Hi guys,

How can I change just the In-text citation while keeping the reference style?

I need to use the Cell style for the references in my thesis. But I am facing two problems with its In-text citation format ("Name, year"):

1) Unnecessary space consume
2) Impossibility to cite references that are in websites. The following message appears as In-text citation: "CSL Style Error: reference with no printed form".

I am allowed and would like to use a numeric citation format "(1)". I have been trying to change just the In-text citation style in Zotero while keeping the reference Cell style but without success.

I am new in Zotero. Is this actually possible?
  • Generally not without modifying the style, but
    https://www.zotero.org/styles?q=id:the-american-journal-of-human-genetics looks like it would do what you want (though with a superscript number instead of (1) in the text)
  • To add to this, I have a paper that must be done in APA format. There are times when I mention the author's name and need to cite the year only. If I modify the typical citation (Name, year) to just (year) THEN refresh the links, Zotero will either remove the link from the citation and keep my changes or keep the link and put the citation back to (Name, date). Is there any way around this?

    In the Add/Edit Citation window, click the blue bubble for the item and check the suppress author box. Then type the name in text.
  • Thank you bwiernik! Just to let you know, I did not see a blue button anywhere (I'm using the MS Word add-on) but when I switched to "classic view" while inserting a citation, there is a checkbox to suppress the name. That worked great. Thanks for your help. :-)
  • I meant “blue bubble” for the item in the text box.
  • OH!!! I see what you mean. I never thought of that as clickable. When the item appears in the text box, I just hit ENTER. This is even easier!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
  • From the keyboard, you can also type Ctrl/Cmd+Down Arrow to open the dialog.

    SOLUTION

    1. Select Documents Preferences in the Zotero Tab on Word

    2. Select the cell citation style pre-install in zotero and click “manage styles”

    3. Click on style editor

    4. Click and selected “cell” if its not selected and then place the cursor in the text and press “ctrl + a”

    5. Press “delete”

    6. Copy the code below:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <style xmlns="http://purl.org/net/xbiblio/csl"; class="in-text" version="1.0" demote-non-dropping-particle="sort-only" default-locale="en-US">

    7. Paste in the empty field and click “save as” at the top left hand corner

    8. Name it “cell numeric” and click save (remember where you saved the file)

    9. Go to zotero preferences and click the little “+” button at the bottom right

    10. Go to the folder whereyou saved the newly created citation style and select the file.

    11. Done!!!

    12. Now you can go to “document preferences”, select the newly installed citation style, then refresh!

    13. Done done!!!

    14. Update coming soon (we have square brackets not semi-circles)!!!
