Zotero not abbreviating citation of 4 authors to et al. after first use

I have 4 articles with the same first two authors but some of the articles have 3 and 4 additional authors. One of the articles with 4 authors is not abbreviating to et al. after the first citation. Why is this happening?
Thank you,
L
  • This depends on the style. What style are you using?
  • APA 6th edition. Sorry I did not mention that.
  • I also neglected to mention that all of the articles are 2018.
  • Okay, the rule in APA is that if two shortened articles would be ambiguous and have the same form—such as both to “(Jones et al., 2018)”—add extra authors to the citations to make them unambiguous. For example. “(Jones, Smith, James, & Watson, 2018) and (Jones, Smith, James, & Johnson, 2018)”

Zotero/CSL follows this rule for shortening citations.
  • Thank you for your response. One last question, it says in the APA manual that if the DOI number is not available, then the url should be listed if available. I do not see Zotero listing the url for references without a DOI. Is there something I need to do to have Zotero do that or do I need to manually type the url? Thank you again.
  • In Zotero preferences, under Cite, check the box to "Include URL for paper articles"
