My Zotero plug-in is closed but says it's open and won't re-open?

I restarted my computer and now when I try to open the Zotero plug-in a popup message says that it cannot open b/c only one copy of Zotero can be open at a time. Does anyone have suggestions or insights on how to solve or get to the bottom of this issue? I've double checked that Zotero it not open and it's not.
