Cannot edit zotero citations after a table of content is inserted in MS Word

Hi! I'm working with a file in MS Word 2010 and apparently, I cannot add/edit the citations when I have a table of contents. However, it works perfectly when I delete the table of content. I wonder whether there is a solution to this issue without the workaround.

    I’ve not had that problem with tables of contents before—what exactly happens when you try to add/edit a citation with the table of contents inserted?
