Download error -228 when trying to install extension..

I keep getting the following error when trying to install zotero on Firefox 2.0:

--
Error

Firefox could not install the file at

http://www.zotero.org/download/zotero-1.0.0b2.xpi

because: Download error
-228

Any help would be appreciated..
  • Could I need a newer beta of Firefox than I have? I have the build from the end of July. Where can I find a newer build? Thanks!
  • Firefox 2 RC2:
    http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/all-rc.html
  • Mozilla is updating their mirrors to 2.0rc2 right now--you should be able to get it later today.
  • If you're impatient:
    http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0rc2/
  • I am impatient, thanks! I'll try it now..
  • unfortunately, the same error pops up after I click the install button..
  • Sorry about this error, which happens occasionally with the beta of Firefox 2.0 and which we hope will be rectified in the final release of the browser. Which OS are you using?

A simple workaround for this problem is to save the Zotero file to your hard drive (it's a file that ends in .XPI; right-click to save it rather than a regular click, which would go straight to the file in the browser), and then open the file manually from within Firefox 2.0 (using file->open file...).
  • thanks so much, worked perfectly...
  • I have a somewhat similar error happening when trying to install. The error reads

Firefox could not install the file at [link to local file]
    because: Unexpected installation error
Review the Error Console log for more details. -203

The Console log indicates the following:
    Error: installLocation has no properties
    Source File: file:///opt/firefox/components/nsExtensionManager.js
    Line: 3849

    Any help??

    I'm using: from help about:
    Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

    On Suse Linux 10.1
  • Check the capitalization of your file names. I noticed that some PHP servers are case sensitive. If that's the case, when installing the toolbar for FF, before you click the button, read the installation prompt very carefully. Hope this helps!
  • I'm getting this error too for
    http://www.zotero.org/download/zotero-2.0.2.xpi

    Windows XP Professional; Firefox 3.6.2

I've tried right-clicking and downloading the above link as has been suggested, but it won't download.

    Thanks in advance.
  • Thanks Dan. Installing via the add-ons site did it.
  • Tried all of the solutions described above.

    None of them worked.

    :-(

I don't want to go back to EndNote.
  • hanowell: See the troubleshooting section on the installation page. Given that those include having someone on a different network download the XPI and send it to you, I suspect you didn't really try those. But that shouldn't be necessary.
  • Dan: tried that. Didn't work. Same 228 error.

I uninstalled Zotero originally because there was a Database error. So I just figured I could uninstall and reinstall to see if that fixed things as it often does.

    Now i can't reinstall.

I have a feeling this has to do with the fact that I am using a Remote Desktop Connection to my research institution's server, and they may have just recently changed permissions (since Mozilla says one reason 228 comes up is because I'm not allowed to install an add-on). I wonder if that's the reason for the database error, too, since Zotero works fine on my own machine.
  • You'll have to try a different setup on your machine or take this up with Mozilla support, then. Zotero is just a Firefox extension, and it should install if other Firefox extensions install. If they don't, it won't. But we can't support problems with Firefox itself.
