Cannot sync files from online Zotero to computer

Some time ago I lost the link between my computer and Zotero, but ignored it because I didn't have a project that needed references. Since then I have a new computer. I downloaded Zotero 5.0 and the Firefox connector. When I press the sync button it merrily spins then quits - there is no message nor is the data transferred to my computer. I can see the files on the Zotero site, so they do exist.

I finally downloaded the 1841 files from the Zotero website to my computer, but there are no folders. Any idea how to rebuild the folders?

You definitely don't need to rebuild anything. What do you see in the left-hand pane?

I see 1841 files (icon + Title, Creator). There are no folders.

Meaning that you see an empty left-hand pane, or that you don't see a left-hand pane at all? I'm guessing you just collapsed the left-hand pane and need to expand it.

Left hand pane has 3 columns: Icon+ Title, Creator, and a sort column.
Right hand pane has the full reference.
I have a screen shot, but I am unsure how to attach it.

Yeah, that's the middle pane, not the left pane. You just need to expand the left pane by clicking on the narrow bar on the left edge.
