Upgrade StorageFirefox 57 connector doesn't work on most pages

On some web pages it works fine, but on most, when you click the button nothing happens, no little box in the right bottom corner, no new entry in zotero standalone 5.0.25.
I can't see any obvious pattern to which pages work and which don't.
It is consistent across reboots.

In particular, try disabling other Firefox extensions, in case something is conflicting.
The icon and the menu options from right-clicking the icon all look fine.
All software is latest (just upgraded from older firefox+plugin)

NB this is an older slow computer running 32 it windows.
have any assumptions been made in the design of the software about the speed of the computer?
(eg like in google maps that would not work at all on my PC until they made the lite version)
