PDF not downloading from JSTOR

Since the change to the Zotero button in Chrome, citations from JSTOR are not being downloaded with a copy of the PDF article. An example case:

http://www.jstor.org/stable/2775210?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents

I can still manually download PDFs and attach them to the citation, but obviously the scenario where a full citation + the PDF were scraped was much more efficient.

I am using Zotero v. 4.0.28.7, and Chrome v. 49.0.2623.110
  • 1) update Zotero -- I don't think it'll matter, but best to be sure and good idea to be on the most recent version anyway.
    2) Make sure you have downloaded/opened one PDF and accepted the use conditions before trying

I don't think this should be affected by the recent changes in the Chrome connector at all (and works for me)

    Zotero is up to date.

Citation does not pull the PDF from this page (http://www.jstor.org/stable/2775210?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents) or from the PDF after having clicked through "Download PDF" and getting to a standalone PDF in the Chrome browser (http://www.jstor.org/stable/pdf/2775210.pdf).
  • if you're using Zotero 4.0.28.7, it's not up to date. The current Zotero version (not the same as the Chrome connector, necessarily) is 4.0.29.5

    Beyond that, run through:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
as relevant. I'd also be curious whether you get a PDF shown in the Saving to Zotero popup (and then a red x before it) or no sign of a PDF at all.
  • Hrrm. Zotero does not identify that my version is out of date when I select the "Check for Updates" in Zotero Standalone. Will manually update.

I did, however, manage to update Chrome, which seemed to fix the issue. For documentation's sake, I was getting the saving PDF text in the pop-up, but then a red X would appear. Now it seems to be saving correctly. <shrug>

(We're aware of an issue with updates not showing up for some Standalone users. Will have a fix soon.)
  • I am having the same problem with the PDF not downloading from the Jstor or other journal providers. I manually save it as a pdf then drag it into zotero under the metadata reference... better if it went directly there. Is this a permission issue from the website? i definitely have the latest version
  • Have you tried manually downloading one PDF, agreeing to JSTOR's terms of use, and see if the PDF attaches automatically afterwards?
  • Hi Adam - yes now it works! thanks for your help
