Best Practices for Using Zotero

I'm using the FF plug-in. So currently when I find an article I want to read, I download the citation on the webpage on the webpage directly (not using any of the drop-down options in the tool bar.

I keep seeing everyone discussing downloading PDFs. Right now I have open Zotero, click on the article, be on my school's network or VPN to read an article, then navigate to download the PDF each time I want read it.

For example, http://hfs.sagepub.com/content/50/1/90.abstract.

Is there a better way? Ideally I'd like to be able to double click in Zotero and the PDF pop open automatically. Any input onto the process to do this, or any other best practices in Zotero, is appreciated. Thank you!
  • If you click on the "Save to Zotero" icon on that page while on your school's network, Zotero should automatically attach the PDF to the article it downloads. Is that not the case?

I'm not quite sure what you mean by this:
I download the citation on the webpage on the webpage directly
    what exactly do you click?
