Zotero Standalone + Chrome extension

Hi! I've installed Zotero Standalone and the extension for Chrome. I can see the "Save Page to Zotero" when use the right button on a web page but nothing happens: webpages don't get across to my Zotero Standalone. I've checked for the settings for the Chrome extension and found this:

Zotero Standalone
Zotero Standalone is currently available.

Save via Server
Zotero Connector must be authorized in order to save items to zotero.org when Zotero Standalone is not open.

Report Errors
Zotero Connector has experienced the following errors since it was first started:

[JavaScript Error: "Attempting to use a disconnected port object" {file: "extensions::messaging" line: 70}]

Any ideas???
  • And you're positive you have Zotero Standalone running when you try that, yes?

Could you try disabling your security software (obviously only temporary for testing) and try again?
  • Hi there,
I have absolutely the exact same problem. I have zotero standalone and the extension for chrome, i also see 'save page to zotero' when I right click on a webpage and nothing happens.
    Can you help?
    Thanks
  • In Chrome, under Extensions --> Zotero Connector --> Options --> Advanced

Does it say that Standalone is Available or not?

Does import via URL bar icon work or not either?
  • I'm having same issue - for me, I have the standalone Zotero program open; The URL bar icon isn't showing up for me - although it was there when I first installed about 30 minutes ago; and under chrome://extensions page it says Zotero Connector is enabled and yet under options -- advanced -- it says that it is UNavailable.
  • If it does say that Standalone is unavailable, check what you get when you post
    http://127.0.0.1:23119/connector/ping
into the Chrome URL bar (make sure Standalone is running) and hit enter. You should get something like "Endpoint is not supported by this application"
  • "Endpoint does not support method"

    So what does that mean?
  • it's a check that the port through which Zotero is communicating with the Chrome extension isn't getting blocked or re-routed. It doesn't in your case, so that's fine.

You're not seeing the URL bar icon e.g. here?
    http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-books-i-iii/oclc/8424650
  • No icon whatsoever. And I've tried every possible OPTIONS, TOOLS and SETTING it seems and I noticed that some of my other extensions have a SHOT BUTTON option so that the icon is visible - yet Zotero doesn't have that. Should I reinstall?
  • I know it's repeating the above, but I can't get the icon in my bar either :(
I did all the things you said above...
  • could you specify "all the things you said above"?
And no icon on http://www.worldcat.org/title/wealth-of-nations-books-i-iii/oclc/8424650 ?
  • Hi,

I have the same problem, Windows 10, Chrome Version 48.0.2564.109 m, Zotero Connector 4.0.26. In the options Zotero Standalone is available, I also get the icon on the WorldCat title, right-click "save to Zotero" works as well there; yet I do not get it for example here http://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/6/7/4246/htm or here http://jasss.soc.surrey.ac.uk/12/1/3.html.

the ping command does also end up with "Endpoint does not support method". Any further idea? Thanks in advance!
  • @MGR21 -- if this works for you on some sites, you're not seeing the same issue. Start a new thread please. A debug ID for loading or reloading either of those pages would be helpful. Neither is specifically supported by Zotero, but the translator should recognize at least the basics.

Thanks, Adam, for replying. After several restarts of Zotero Standalone as well as my PC I'm now able to get web pages across to Zotero Standalone, at least the ones I mentioned in my previous post worked now. Also other web pages do work now, by right-clicking as well as via the icon.

A problem remains with PDF documents which I cannot get across. I have neither the "Save page to Zotero" option nor the icon. But this might be a settings issue?

Lastly, but maybe no longer relevant: how do I get a debug ID?

    Thanks!
  • PDFs are clumsy currently with Standalone. You can either save to the harddisk and drag to Zotero or drag the URL directly to Zotero. We'll have a permanent icon eventually.
  • Thanks, I'll live with the workaround then!
