Importing citation into Word displays lots of metadata

Hi-
When adding a citation into Microsoft Word, the system displays a bunch of metadata and other gobbledygook instead of the normal in-text citation as it usually does - For example: (Jones 2010). This is the first time this happened in the 2+years I've been using Zotero and Word. I've appended a sample of the stuff that it puts in my Word doc.

I've updated the plugin, so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas on what might be the problem? Thanks.

Specs:
Microsoft Word 2011
Zotero 4.0.26.3

  • try pressing alt+F9 (on your keyboard). That toggles the visibility of Word Fields, which is where Zotero stores citation information.
  • Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately alt+F9 didn't do anything, i.e., didn't show any Word fields.
  • It'd hide them, not show them (just to be sure: alt+F9 is opt+F9 on a Mac). That's almost certainly the issue, though -- you can right click on any given one of these and select "toggle field codes" to test.
  • Okay, when I CTRL-click and selected "toggle field" codes that successfully removed all of the metadata and goobledygook :) However, when I add the next (i.e., new) in-text citation, it throws in all the metadata again and so I have to CTRL-click then Toggle Field codes every time. How can I prevent Zotero/Word from always adding in all the metadata, etc. whenever I add a new cite? Thanks.
  • ptietjen: I'd guess that you're just pressing or not pressing the fn key, depending on your settings. But you can also change the default in the Word preferences.
  • These are the instructions on where to find this in the prefs for Word 2008 http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/05/10/how-to-toggle-field-codes-off-or-on-in-word/
    I'd assume 2011 is similar.
  • Thanks Dan & Adam - this looks promising. I'm up against a deadline at the moment, but will definitely look into this later.
  • Do you have Track Changes on? Zotero will re-show the Field Codes each time you edit a citation with it on. The codes will hide once you accept the changes.
