Unable to dowload a pdf Journal Article with metadata

Hello everyone,

I am using Firefox (36.0.4) and I recently installed Zotero (version 4.0.26.2). For some reasons, I am unable to download a pdf document from academic journal with the metadata. It says in French "Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'enregistrement de ce lien" (> a error occurred while registering the link).

I have sent an error report which has the following ID: 1297536935.

I have tried to understand on other discussions how to solve this issue, but I did not manage to solve it.

Can you please help me?

Thanks in advance,

Célia
  • what's the URL you're trying to save from? And what exactly are you doing? Clicking the URL bar icon or something else (if so what). Feel free to write in French if that's easier.
  • The article is from the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology; and the URL is the following:

    http://ac.els-cdn.com.ezproxy.ub.unimaas.nl/S0278416513000457/1-s2.0-S0278416513000457-main.pdf?_tid=3c35635e-de0d-11e4-b1ee-00000aab0f01&acdnat=1428511095_ac6dd67264f19cece10d766bd5849bba

First I click on 'downloading'. I have then various options among which I can choose 'save in Zotero' and I can also check the box 'retrieve pdf metadata'. Whether I check this box or not, after clicking ok, I have the following message:
"Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'enregistrement de ce lien" (> a error occurred while registering the link).

Do you need additional information? :s

    Have a good day!
  • Sorry, I just realized that you need to have an account at my university to be able to access the document.

Basically the document I tried to download in Zotero is this one:
    http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0278416513000457

But thanks to my organization, I have a free access to that document.
  • Usually, it is suggested to use (whenever possible) the "Zotero Picker", which will save the metadata and the pdf with a single click.

not sure that'll work here, given the proxied form of the URL? Though if it does, yes, definitely do this.

In any case, what Celia tries should certainly not produce an error.
Can you try updating to Zotero 4.0.26.4 (or .3 if you're not on Windows) and see if that helps?
  • Every once in a while, I get the same error message. I tried the "Zotero Picker" method. The reference and snapshot got properly saved, and I could see that Zotero tried to download the PDF, but a bold red "x" appeared next to the PDF icon during the downloading process. The article I tried to download (freely available) is: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/tme.12091/pdf.
  • are you saying this always fails for you or just occasionally? And what Zotero setup and OS do you use? I think there is an issue with Wiley when using Chrome (and Safari?) on Mac.
  • adamsmith: this is a sporadic problem. It occurs at work, where I am using Zotero with Firefox ESR version 31.7.0, on a Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 operating system. Whenever this occurs, there is a go-around, i.e., saving the PDF, then linking the reference to it or integrating the PDF within the reference in Zotero, but it requires more operations, takes more time, not as convenient, etc.
  • When the download fails and you try to access the PDF directly on Wiley, does the PDF appear on a page of its own, or is there a banner at the top of the page? Also, a Debug log for a failing download would help. https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
