Can't make translator work with Jstor

I'm using Firefox 36.0 with Zotero 4.026.1.

NY Time and Amazon work. When I am on Jstor and hover over the document in the URL bar I see "Save to Zotero (JSTOR)." A box opens up with text "Saving to Zotero" but no record is created.

Is anyone else having problems like this?

FYI, when I try to use some of the other options at Jstor (such as save citation) I get a certificate error. No such error on the main page but also no https. Not sure if this could be part of the problem or not.
  • What's the *exact* URL? I suppose you're using a proxy?
  • Yes, to get access, I use a proxy at my university. I could try from on campus or by getting my own account.

I also discovered that if I click on the box that says "Saving to CollectionName" the information is saved.
  • Could you submit a Debug Log for a save attempt that does not complete? https://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output
I also discovered that if I click on the box that says "Saving to CollectionName" the information is saved.
My guess would be that the save is just taking some time to complete (JSTOR can sometimes be slow). There's no functionality that would make clicking the progress dialog influence import.

Here is the Debug ID: D44922714

In this instance, I waited for the "Saving to ..." box to close on its own. It did without saving and the did seem to generate an error.

However, as I tried to replicate the effect of clicking on the box (and yes, you are right, this had no effect - yet another instance of how we can be fooled by randomness) I found that after one or two tries that failed, several worked and now the problem is intermittent. Also, when I click on what looks like a document, when it works I download not only the citation information, but a copy of the PDF as well.

Let me know if you want me to try anything else.

  • Does the Saving to... box that pops up display the title you're trying to save or not?
  • No, when it fails, title does not display.

Not sure what Dan Stillman's point is.
  • that's just the relevant content of your debug for us to see.

When submitting that debug -- were you connecting to JSTOR through a proxy? Would you mind pasting a proxied URL here? (if need be, you can x out the name of your school)
  • I'm not sure how to get you the proxied URL. Can you advise?

I was connected through the NYU proxy.
  • Just get the URL from the URL bar when you're on the page you want to import into Zotero from
  • http://www.jstor.org/stable/2350553?Search=yes&resultItemClick=true&&searchUri=%2Faction%2FdoAdvancedSearch%3Fwc%3Don%26amp%3Bq3%3D%26amp%3Bc6%3DAND%26amp%3Bf2%3Dall%26amp%3Bf4%3Dall%26amp%3Bpt%3D%26amp%3Bc1%3DAND%26amp%3Bq4%3D%26amp%3Bq0%3Dgeorge%2Bstigler%26amp%3Bf5%3Dall%26amp%3Bsd%3D%26amp%3Bf6%3Dall%26amp%3Bgroup%3Dnone%26amp%3Bf1%3Dall%26amp%3Bed%3D%26amp%3Bc4%3DAND%26amp%3Bc2%3DAND%26amp%3Bacc%3Don%26amp%3Bq1%3D%26amp%3Bc3%3DAND%26amp%3Bq5%3D%26amp%3Bla%3D%26amp%3Bf0%3Dau%26amp%3Bq2%3D%26amp%3Bf3%3Dall%26amp%3Bc5%3DAND%26amp%3Bq6%3D%26amp%3Bisbn%3D&seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents
  • Is the expected behavior that clicking on the document in the toolbar automatically downloads a pdf copy of the paper? Is there a way to download only the citation information?
  • Here is another:

you can turn off automatic PDF attachment in the general tab of the Zotero preferences. (but yes, downloading the PDF is expected default behavior)

Those URLs are fine--so you're using this? http://www.nyu.edu/its/nyunet/offcampus/proxy/

it's possible that causes problems. Have you tried using VPN instead, as suggested on that page? My guess is that this is connected to the NYU Proxy, though hard to say.
  • Thx re change in preferences to avoid automatic downloads.

FYI, as I noted, yesterday this switched to an intermittent problem. Today, without any change in the configuration on my end it is working fine. I can't reproduce the problem so can't assess the effects of alternative ways to connect.
  • it's also possible it was an intermittent JSTOR problem. What happened was that the citation data (RIS) didn't load from JSTOR. If it's working reliably now, I'd guess that was that the case.
  • Yes, probably some kind of problem at JSTOR.

    Thx.
