import pdfs

I am starting a new Zotero diary. I have several hundred pdf. If I drag them into program they get added as files but Zotero makes no attempt to identify them and add metadata. Is there any way to do this automatically (at least for most of the pdfs) or do I need to enter all the data on every pdf manually?
