Authors with Eastern/Western ordered names

I am citing a few Hungarian and English articles and currently in deep waters what kind of CSL should I choose.

The problem is that Hungarian names are in reversed order from an Englishman's point of view (see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_name#Name_order), so if I choose/create a CSL with Western order, then Hungarian names look lame, if I take the Eastern order, then the English names are not OK.

Is there any way to create some kind of filter for the name order? Maybe filtering by a language field or something. I would be really happy to update my `bib` files and specify the sort order of each name, just nor sure how to do that :(

Any hint would be really appreciated!

this was written with Asian languages in mind, so author order is very much one of the issues considered.
There isn't much you can do in mainstream Zotero, filtering by language isn't possible in citation styles.
  • @nevermind: Funny you should mention Hungarian. A colleague mentioned this Hungarian names issue to me just yesterday. The citation processor does not currently produce the correct result, but we have a model to work from: Vietnamese is also indistinguishable (sometimes) from European script. For reliable name formatting, we rely in that case on correct language tagging. To prepare your data for a correctly functioning processor, the Language field of Hungarian entries should begin with "hu".
  • Thank you very much for prompt and helpful replies, I really appreciate that.

@adamsmith: will check out that promising fork soon, but I try to solve this issue without custom builds if possible.

@fbennett: I have no idea how could I overlook that field :O Checking out if I can do some filters in the CSL editor. Awesome!
  • @nevermind - fbennett maintains the fork - the solution he talks about only applies to it. While the language field exists in Zotero, you cannot test for its content in mainstream Zotero.
  • Ah, I see, thanks @adamsmith (and also @fbennett for your great work)!
The fact is that I am using mendeley too beside zotero, so I try to resolve my issue with a system independent solution, so creating a CSL style which would have a filter to render the names in Western or Easter order.

I got stuck @ http://steveridout.com/csl/visualEditor/ to reference the `language` field in the list of variables of a new filter, but if this won't succeed, then I will create a custom CSL file with a unique biblio file where I will add the language e.g. to the `notes` field :)
