How do you detect the character (language?) code of a particular variable?

Background: Some foreign journals require different citation styles - one style for the home-language references and another for foreign-language references.

Question: Is it possible to detect the character code of a particular variable, like author or container-title, so you can bifurcate the citation style based on the character code?

the way to go eventually is the language field, not some type of character detection (which obviously wouldn't work for any language using Latin characters). Right now, mainstream Zotero can't test for the content of the language field (just whether something is in there or not), but if this is something that comes up for you a lot, you can look at the multilingual version: http://citationstylist.org/
