Style Request: Molecular Biology of the Cell

I would really like to use the citation style of "Molecular Biology of the Cell." Here is a link to their website that explains their preferred bibliography and call-out style.

    Hi there,

    I would also like to request this style. It is a very similar style to that of the journal Cell.

    Differences that I have found thus far are as follows:
    General differences:
    - Multiple initials are separated by a space in MBoC, but not in Cell.
    - "et al." is italicized in MBoC, but not in Cell.

    Bookchapters:
    - MBoC uses a colon after "in" (to denote the book the chapter is from), while Cell does not.
    - editors are indicated by "ed." before the name(s) in MBoC versus "eds" after the names in Cell
    - The publisher-place and publisher are separated from the editors by a comma in MBoC versus between brackets in Cell
    - pp is omitted to indicate the page numbers in MBoC as compared to Cell

    Books:
    - The publisher-place and publisher are separated from the author by a period in MBoC versus between brackets in Cell

    Here is the full information from the website of this journal (from: http://www.molbiolcell.org/site/misc/ifora.xhtml#C2):

    References should contain complete titles and inclusive page numbers and should be listed in alphabetical order. For references with 10 authors or fewer, list all authors. For references with more than 10 authors, list first author followed by "et al." (in italics) Abbreviate journal titles according to the National Library of Medicine (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?db=journals) or the most recent issue of BIOSIS Serial Sources.

  • I have created this style myself using the cell style as a template.

    There in one bug left as far as I could tell (an extra space before the comma preceding publisher-place for books and bookchapters). There may be more that I haven't detected, it is my first time editing a style and I may have screwed up some things. Also, it doesnt validate in http://simonster.github.com/csl-validator.js/ for some reason which i don't really get.

    For my own purposes this is going to be good enough (I am not even referencing any books or chapters), so I will not spend time tracking and fixing the bugs.
    If anyone is interested in the style, having it or fixing it, I am happy to share! (I think I cannot upload to repository as long as it doesnt comply to the validator, correct?)
  • post it as a public gist at gist.github.com and provide the URL here, please.

  • A mistake in line 60:

    <bibliography et-al-min="11" et-al-use-first="10">

    should be:

    <bibliography et-al-min="11" et-al-use-first="1">
  • The style is now up. It will show up on the repository within 30mins. It may take up to 24hs for the preview to work.
    If you submit corrections or additions to the style in the future, please always work with the most recent copy from the style repository, as we frequently adjust the formatting of styles slightly.

    Thank you for contributing!
  • Has anyone an interest to update the citation style for Molecular Biology of the cell?

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4072565/

    This allows the fair citation of co-first authors in the text, i.e.:

    Smith et al. 2014 (for normal first authors)
    Smith, Johnson et al. 2015 (for co-first authors)

    So far I have found no other style which would allow that.

    I have no idea how to do this, but would highly appreciate it!

    Thanks!
