in-text citation style does not update when I change the paragraph style

When I change the style of a certain paragraph in Word, the in-text citation does not update with the rest of the paragraph. Is there any fix for this?

I don't seem to have one. When I put my curser in the in-text citation, 'normal' is selected in Styles.

Set the paragraph style before inserting the citation. The style of the text at insert is what is set for the citation. Be sure to use Word styles (Normal, Body, etc), not direct styling of the text
