Upgrade StorageFeature Request: Allow Dragging Zotero Attachments into External Readers Using the Original File
I’d like Zotero to offer a setting or drag option that lets users drag an attachment from Zotero into an external reader using the original file in the Zotero library, rather than a temporary copy in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp\Zotero\drag.
Currently, the external application receives a temporary copy. Annotations or edits made to that copy are not applied to the attachment in the Zotero library. Right-clicking Show File and then dragging the file from the file manager works, but having to locate the file first makes this workflow cumbersome.
Some users primarily use Zotero to manage and find their research files, and don’t use the built-in reader’s annotation features. They prefer their existing external readers and want annotations saved in the PDF itself. For these users, dragging the original attachment directly into an external reader would be a more natural workflow.
I understand that passing the original file could introduce a risk of it being moved or modified. This could therefore be an opt-in setting or a one-time drag option, with a warning about the associated risks.
