Hi everyone,
I would like to share a plugin I have been building for Zotero and is named: Zoetro AI Assistant. It helps you read, appraise and compare scientific articles using your own AI account, free or paid. There is no server in between.
What it does:
Side panel for one article: summary, main ideas, plain-language explanation, key concepts, mind map, study questions (exportable to Anki), critical appraisal with the right checklist (CONSORT, STROBE, PRISMA, COREQ, CASP, JBI), methods and data, reading sheet saved as a note, research gaps and key references.
Window for several articles: compare articles side by side, ask a question to a whole folder or collection, build an interactive topic map, draft a literature review and screen articles against your criteria (with the numbers for a PRISMA diagram).
Interactive maps: the mind map and the topic map can be moved and zoomed, and every idea shows its page. Clicking opens the PDF at that page.
What makes it different
The AI is told to use only the text of your PDFs.
Every answer is then checked against the PDFs: quoted passages must exist on the cited page, cited pages must exist, numbers must appear in the text and calculations must be correct. Anything that does not match is flagged under the answer.
Citations follow APA, or your own Zotero citation style (authors and year come from Zotero, never from the AI).
Connect an AI: Gemini (free tier), a ChatGPT account (through the official Codex tool), the ChatGPT API, or IAEdu (for Portuguese higher education community). The settings explain each option step by step.
Privacy: to answer, the text of the selected PDFs goes to the AI service you chose. Nothing else is sent anywhere. Conversations stay on your computer.
The interface is in English and European Portuguese. It is open source (AGPL-3.0).

Great plugin and very useful with its structured and clear approach of utilizing AI. Some initial notes and suggestions to consider if possible:
1-The pages cited are 1,2,3,4, ... and are not identical to actual numbering of pages.
2- Some answers are given in Portuguese instead of English
