Feature Request: Group configuration options for consistent Citation Key, file naming

A shared Group collection of references should enforce a consistent pattern for populating the Citation Key, and for naming PDF files. Currently, I have to point Group users to a web page with complicated instructions for configuring everything so it works consistently. It would be much better to just have this be automatic.

This would require having the main Zotero web-hosted system have support for Better BibTeX's (@emilianoeheyns) functionality for specifying how the Citation Key is constructed. This also seems like something that belongs in the main zotero app, as having unique, human-readable citation keys for references seems like important basic functionality in a reference manager.

I don't use the Word etc plugins, and don't know how they work, but I could imagine that having the ability to use the Citation Key instead of the unique numeric ID for a reference would be handy there too, not just in LaTeX.

The consistent naming of PDF files is helpful for when you share those with others etc, and having that match the Citation Key is what I do. In any case, the fact that the current prefs don't apply to the Groups data is very confusing, and again consistency in naming for the whole collection seems like an important feature. This was discussed in this earlier thread: https://forums.zotero.org/discussion/129913/cannot-have-file-name-be-citationkey-zotero-8-issue

Is there any chance of prioritizing something like this? :)

Group admins&owners _can_ (as of Zotero 9.0) specify the file renaming format for a group, which then cannot be changed by members and applies to everyone in the group, so that part is possible. You can select a library (i.e. any group) to define File Renaming in the General tab of the Zotero preferences.

The Citation Key issue is correct. Zotero has never been particularly interested in them and as you may recall, they didn't actually exist in Zotero at all until quite recently (you never see any item ID when using Word/LibreOffice/GoogleDocs integration, so it's completely irrelevant there).

Unless Zotero devs chime in here to say they'll do more work on citekeys in the near future, I think it's worth bringing this up with the BBT developer -- I don't know for sure if group specific citation key settings that can only be set by admins and sync are possible for a plugin to do, but I think it may well be (the sync part would presumably be the challenge).
  • @adamsmith -- thanks for pointing out the update on file renaming! Just did it and all worked perfectly!

The paradigm of using the local app to change the group settings seems like it could work in principle for BBT, as long as there is some kind of flexible sync protocol where these settings can be uploaded somewhere centrally and retrieved. Then we only have to ensure that all users install the BBT plugin. We'll see what Emiliano says.
  • I am chasing a memory leak at the moment (it's fun, you should try it :[) but I do have a plans for syncable settings as "magic" standalone attachments.
