Custom UI Runtime Error in Zotero.dotm

I had two separate issues here.

First, in addition to the Windows update issue, Norton also seems to interfere with the Zotero update process on my system. In my case, Norton Behavioral Protection started blocking executables launched from the TEMP folder. This prevented the Zotero updater from completing the post-update step.

Second, the “Custom UI Runtime Error in Zotero.dotm” error - specifically, “An error occurred while loading image with relationship ID zoteroz16” - was not resolved for me by reinstalling or updating Zotero. - (MSWORD 2021 x64)

I was able to fix it only by manually editing Zotero.dotm as an archive. In my installed Zotero.dotm, customUI/customUI.xml contained a reference to image="zoteroz16", but there was no corresponding relationship with Id="zoteroz16" in customUI/_rels/customUI.xml.rels. I added my own zoteroz16.png icon and added the missing relationship in customUI.xml.rels. After that, the Word plugin started working normally.

    Best regards,
    Andrey
  • Based on previous posts, you were already running a custom version of Zotero.dotm.

We can't provide any support here for customized builds.

You should make sure you've tested with the actual current version of Zotero.dotm by following step 3 here (re: deleting Zotero.dotm and making sure it's gone from Word):

(It looks like this specific error is indeed a bug, but it only appears if you've enabled "Show add-in user interface errors" in Word. Presumably you did that because you were making custom changes to templates previously.)
