In the new version some papers I download come up as attachments so I can't annotate or work with them. I've got the pdfs but can't work with them. What to do?
OK I restarted Zotaro that that seems to have fixed it--at least for the files I checked. But let me describe the issue in detail. In Zotero the center panel shows a list of articles to which I've linked pdfs. When I hit an item, if all goes well, it opens the pdf and shows the text in that panel where I can annotate it. I can also open up a side panel on the right which will show info about the article, notes, etc. Look at the first screenshot. When I tried to open the article you see highlighted it instead of opening the text in the center panel where I could annotate it opened it in the right side panel where I couldn't. Also, when this was going on I had some article in tabs but couldn't open them. Now look at the second screenshot. When I tried to open this one instead of displaying the text of the article it just showed my annotations in the center panel. I've been using Zotero a very long time and this stuff just happened with the new update. At this point things look fixed--for now, at least with the files I checked after I quit and opened up Zotero again. I hope it stays fixed.
It sounds like you're just confusing single-clicking an item and double-clicking an item? Double-clicking opens the attachment in a reader tab, where you view the PDF at full size, annotate, etc. All your screenshots are just showing the library tab. As adamsmith says, there is absolutely no problem shown in your screenshots.
They are showing the library tab because no matter how many times I clicked I couldn't open the pdf. Period. That's why the screen shots showed the library tab--because I couldn't open the pdf--which showed up as an attachment in the right panel. The issue is that I could not open the text. Now that I've quit and restarted I can, at least for now open my pdfs. BTW I'm on a Mac running Sequoia 15.6.1. I am not $%^&* confused.
I mean, OK, but then the thing to report would be that you were double-clicking items in the items list and they were not opening in reader tabs? Your report was not remotely that, so I'm not sure why you're swearing at us.
In any case, nothing was "coming up as attachments" — that's clearly a misunderstanding. Zotero shows an attachment preview in the item pane if you single-click an item in the items list, and has since Zotero 7. That's perfectly normal. It's still not clear that you understand that there was absolutely no problem shown in your screenshots. They just show the normal behavior of clicking an item in the items list.
Zotero 8 also now shows annotations in the items list. So again, absolutely nothing strange there — that's just what you see if you expand an attachment in the items list.
If you have trouble opening items again, provide a Report ID.
