Jurism crashing repeatedly

edited July 16, 2025
I'm trying to add citations and every time Jurism (thats the one the advisors here recommended for my system) crashes. Its not letting me add citations. Says the following:

  • Sorry, but we can only help with Zotero. Jurism isn't our software and is no longer maintained.
  • but people here told me to add Jurism as a solution to a problem i was facing. now what do I do?

You would need to switch to Zotero if you want our help. Jurism has been abandoned by its developer for years.

You should be able to transfer your data by syncing.
  • As a second step (after switching to Zotero), if you explain the problem that Jurism was supposed to solve, perhaps someone can suggest a better supported solution.

it's not completely abandoned, but dstillman is right that it's unlikely the developer will be able to keep up with updates etc. I'm currently exploring what it would take to get its functionality into an add-on for Zotero. Unfortunately, I don't personally have experience with development, so the best I can do is find institutional support among universities/communities to see how best to support them. Although, as forums point out the law and languages functionality might have to be separated in that case.

@dstillman if you have any advice in this area, I would really appreciate it.
  • can someone help me understand what i am supposed to do now? So sorry I went off the grid for a bit and wish to add references using either Jurism or Zotero - whichever does the job.

I was asked by someone here perhaps 4-5 years ago to switch from Z to Jurism due to some problem I was facing. since this was 4-5 years ago, I dont remember the problem. whatever it was, it was solved and I used Jurism for years comfortably until 2024. The initial problem is now irrelevant for me. The only thing I wish to do now is to use a referencing software smoothly. How do I do this? How can i sync my data with Zotero now?

    Many thanks in advance!
  • Juris-M has seen a phase of a couple of years where it wasn't actively maintained/updated and is currently on version 6 of the Zotero base (afaik). So, evidently certain bug fixes are not included. It was looking like that Juris-M was dead for good, but from what we've heard from the maintainer, he's back on track and working on a new version. But of course, nobody can say if/when that will be released.

Generally though, you should be able to switch back to Zotero just by installing it and syncing your account.
  • I have downloaded Zotero and opened it. How can I sync it?
  • I think all you need to do is log in and let it sync.
  • But its showing me this message when i try and add a citation: "Word could not communicate with Zotero. Please ensure that Zotero is open and try again."

    Zotero is open - *shrug*!
  • If you’re talking about Zotero, you should start a new thread and we can help.
