Edit a citation after the first time it is cited

I am currently trying to cite (Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], 2024) but APA asks that after the first use, it be changed to (EPA,2024). However, Zotero does not automatically do this for me. Does anyone know how I can edit a citation to change only after the first time it is cited?
