Translator for OVID

Hello there!

I am really missing a translator for OVID, a common webinterface for the Pubmed and Psycpub databases. Many of my articles I have to access through OVID. However the magic little Zotero icon does not appear.
Thought about writing the translator, but no experience in Javascript or SQlite :(

Anyone in for the task?

Regards
  • Ovid is supported. Please provide URLs that don't work.
  • Hey Dan!

Sounds great! Problem may be, that i access full text articles by Proxy (access through my login at my university).
This means, that the URL probably wont work for you :/
Maybe this confuses Zotero as well...

  • Are you using Zotero 1.0 or 2.0? Zotero 2.0 has enhanced proxy support that may work for you—or at least it may allow you to manually configure your proxy settings to work.

    Hey Dan!

Thanks. I am using Zotero 2.0. Will try to play around with the proxy settings sometime! What does %h mean? I have a proxy added to my Zotero settings. But this doesn't make Ovid work.
It seems OVID support is not working for many, as I can see from various Forum threads. Hopefully I'll find a way.

  • Hi :)

Have you figured out what the problem for you was Nino or are there any other ideas/places to look anybody else? - I see that this thread is fairly old..

but have the same problem. Have only been using zotero for a couple of months, and i'm sure i had the folder icon in Ovid searches to start with, but the last couple of weeks (?) its been gone.. still there for google searches and others but Ovid's the main database i use so its been a bit tedious using the more roundabout ways to get the articles :)

    cheers!
  • Hi,
I'm having the same problem, with no zotero icon in the address bar. How do I change my proxy settings for the ovid translator for my University?

    URL:
    http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com.libproxy.ucl.ac.uk/sp-2.3/ovidweb.cgi?&S=GIEAFPFPPADDFNEMNCELJDJCGJBOAA00&SELECT=S.sh|&R=16&Process+Action=display

    thanks
    Ellie
  • I can't get Z to work with Ovid too. I've created the bib in text format (b/c I was unable to direct export) and then try importing. i'm told that a translator could not be found. is there something i should install?
  • I'm using Zotero 1.0.10 and during Sept. through Nov. 2009 the Ovid translator worked. It no longer works. The "Save to Zotero" icon has disappeared.

    Here's a url:
    http://ovidsp.tx.ovid.com.proxy.medlib.iupui.edu/sp-2.3/ovidweb.cgi?&S=JELBFPIOGIDDOMLNNCELKBGCECMPAA00&Abstract=S.sh.16|10|1

I access Ovid through a university proxy. The translator for PubMed still works, but I much prefer Ovid. PubMed also goes through the university proxy.

Is there any way I can fix this?

I had the same problem, but I've just discovered a workaround to solve the problem, at least for me:

[Edit: No longer necessary. See below.]

    1. Search for the file "ovid.js".

On my system (Mac OS 10.4) it is stored twice:

    a) Library->Application Support->Firefox->...->Zotero->Translators->Ovid.js
    b) Directory where the Zotero-Library is ->Translators -> Ovid.js

(Not knowing which one is the actually used one I did the procedure with both files)

    2. Oben "Ovid.js" with a text editor.

    3. Erase: "target":"/(gw2|spa|spb)/ovidweb\\.cgi"

    4. Paste instead: "target":"/(gw2|spa|spb|sp....)/ovidweb\\.cgi"

    5. Save.

    6. Restart Firefox.

    Now Ovid works again!
  • I searched and could not find ovid.js. I'm using Windows XP SP3. Anybody know where it is?
  • I found the file "scrapers.sql" that has SQL code to insert what appears to be the Ovid translator into a database. I could change the code as above if I knew how to run the SQL on the database.
  • @rwielage: with Zotero 1.0.10 you can use Scaffold to make the change: http://www.zotero.org/support/dev/scaffold
  • The updated Ovid translator has been pushed to clients. Your copy of Zotero should auto-update within 24 hours, or you can update manually by clicking Update Now in the General pane of the Zotero prefs.
  • It works! Dan, Martin and Rintze, thanks for your help!
