Science Direct & Chrome Plug-in (.pdf)

When importing from Science Direct pages using Zotero's Google Chrome plug-in I'm not getting the .pdf, just the citation and snapshot. The .pdf is available on the page, just not pulling it down when it imports.

Anything I need to do differently to get the pdf when using this database? All other databases are working fine when importing.

Cheers!
  • I'll have a look - but generally, pdf import using the connectors for Safari and Chrome is slightly less reliable than in Firefox, so this can happen and we can't always fix it. (PDFs do import from sciencedirect in FF)
  • Sorry for the late response, but could you provide some sample URLs that fail to import PDFs? Also, are you using a proxy?

    The PDF import through Chrome connector and Zotero Standalone appear to work properly on my end.
  • same issue, and same issue with firefox. I don't even get a snapshot with firefox.

    sciencedirect is the only one that doesn't download a pdf so far, I can download the pdfs manually.
  • we need sample URLs as requested by aurimas above. Please paste them exactly as you see them, including any proxy information if applicable.

    I'm on campus when accessing the links, so a box on the top right pops up and says "Brought to you by the UC Santa Cruz Library"

    I'm not sure if that's relevant info, but I thought i'd share it.
  • I don't have any proxy info entered into my pc, it's just automatic as long as I'm on campus.

    Edit: Sorry for the confusion. Please ignore what I said before. I can reproduce this. Looking into it.

    Go through steps 3, 4, 5, 6 here: http://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues

    If that doesn't help, provide a debug ID: http://www.zotero.org/support/debug_output

    The core developer team will have to tackle this one.

    (Edit: @or10918, Firefox plugin does not appear to be affected by this)

    @Simon, Dan,

    If it helps, this is the exception that's being thrown when attaching a PDF:
    'message' => "cannot use the given object as a weak map key"
    'fileName' => "chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/cookieSandbox.js"
    'lineNumber' => 105

  • This looks to be fixed in the upcoming 3.0.11 release. I'm guessing it will be out very soon, since this is a pretty serious bug.
  • This should be fixed in Zotero Standalone 3.0.11.1, available now.
  • I have access of Science Direct pdf articles from my institution. I first log in VPN so I can access my institution's resources. Then I log in ScienceDirect (account refistration is free). Then I can download pdf directly to my Zotero standalone (ver. 4.0.11).

    I am using chrome with plug-in.
  • Are you trying to report a problem? If so, I'm not clear on what exactly is not working.

    Or are you saying that you need a ScienceDirect account to download PDFs? In which case, that should not be necessary. If you can access the PDF on the webpage without ScienceDirect account, you should be able to import it directly into Zotero. (VPN will probably still be necessary)
  • I´m using version 4.0.17, chrome, and PDF are not attach from ScienceDirect, only metatags and a snapshot.

  • I suspect that you're actually seeing 6. here:
    https://www.zotero.org/support/troubleshooting_translator_issues
    since I don't believe Zotero will recognize the URL with hyphens. Even if it did, though, PDF download from Sciencedirect don't work for Standalone using a proxy.
  • I am having the same problem downloading PDFs from Sciencedirect using Chrome, Standalone, and a proxy. I can see the pdf on Sciencedirect, but it won't import into Zotero. Am I interpreting the conclusion above that this is impossible? And, do you have any suggested work-arounds? (Other than manually saving each pdf, which is not really workable for me.)
  • you're interpreting this correctly and the only workarounds are to use Firefox or to not use a proxy (either by using VPN or by downloading on campus).
  • Thank you. Do you have any rough timeline, if any, for when this issue might be resolved?
  • The ticket is here: https://github.com/zotero/zotero-connectors/issues/3
    there may be a solution, but it's a mess and there's no ETA for implementation. If you need this I'd look at one of the workarounds.
  • Pete.erickson, in the meantime I've downloaded and use ZotFile (Zotfile.com). You can set a watched folder, mine is called "Papers for Zotero" and is in my Downloads folder. ZotFile can automatically watch this folder and it when it detects a new pdf, it asks if you want to rename and move the file and attach it to your current selected entry.
    Alternatively, if you don't want to have it watch the folder, you can just right click on an entry (after already downloading the pdf) and select Attach New File.

    It makes it at least a bit less of a headache. I must say, tho, I am surprised this problem can't/hasn't been fixed in so many years.
