Zotero hangs on 'Loading items list'

Zotero standalone 3.07 and 3.0.8 on Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4. Same behavior in Firefox 13.0.1 (Zotero 3.0.7 + 3.0.8).
Zotero (Standalone and Firefox) hangs with 'Loading items list' message on startup. Library is synced to Amazon S3 and about 4gb in size. The message doesn't time out.
Install has been working fine until today. Zotero local storage / data directory is still present. Restarted Zotero Standalone, restarted Firefox, restarted OS and got the same behavior.

    I should add that I checked database integrity using the Zotero tool - no problems surfaced.

    Decided to reset storage to see if that would help things. On Zotero restart got 'Error updating Zotero translators and styles'. After attempting to restore from server got 'An error occurred while restoring from the server:

    [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED) [nsICollation.compareString]" nsresult: "0xc1f30001 (NS_ERROR_NOT_INITIALIZED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://zotero/content/xpcom/data/item.js :: <TOP_LEVEL> :: line 3307" data: no]'
    Item list blank.

    Took me a while to work it out, but it turns out this is an issue with Date and Time on OSX Lion - nothing to do with Zotero.
