I generally use a colon with a space on each side to differentiate between a title and a sub-title (as in "The fruits of victory : alternatives in restoring the Union: 1865 - 1877") Now when I import such a title into word or libreoffice write under windows a black square is inserted in the footnote between the space and the colon. In libreoffice the square is filled and in word it is a black outline only.

Any idea what causes this and how to fix it?

The square does not show up under linux libreoffice...

Is that Windows XP? I think there is a display bug for non-breaking spaces (and this clearly needs to be a non-breaking space so that you won't get an orphaned colon on a new line - I believe that's been recently implemented in Zotero).
There isn't much to be done - don't worry about it, since it's just a display bug, it will just go away as you migrate to a less arcane OS if you need to print or send a document, you can use Search&Replace, though you should do that on a copy of the document so you don't mess with the Zotero citations.

Thanks, glad to know what the problem is. It is XP (at the office, so I have no other option). I'd already thought of the search&replace workaround for printing, so I'll stick with that for now. Thanx again, for taking the time to answer!
