Zotero icon not appearing on Firefox any more

I went to look up some saved citations in Zotero this morning after being away from the program for a couple of weeks. But the Zotero icon does not appear any longer on my screen. Examining my hard drive through "explore," I went into Application data /Mozilla and found under "profiles" that the following files appear:
-storage 0 KB
-zotero.sqlite 894 KB
-zotero.sqlite.bak 894 KB

I believe I noticed a utility that uses zotero.sqlite.bak to recover lost files. Does anyone know if that utility will work?

I was tempted to reinstall Zotero, but I was afraid that might "override" any information that is on my system.

Can't tell which version of Zotero I am using . . . but I believe that a few automatic updates were made in December.

    It would seem you've disabled or uninstalled Zotero. Check to see if Zotero appears in Tools->Add-ons and if it's disabled. If it's not there, you can install it again from the Zotero home page—there shouldn't be any risk whatsoever of data loss, but you can certainly make a backup of the entire Zotero data directory if you're concerned.
