Firefox reported an update. I installed without looking and it turned out to be 3.0a1. I uninstalled, but the 2.1.3 from the zotero.org website also turned out to be 3.0a1.
No, that's not right. Looks like someone got the version numbers mixed up. It's harmless-- you are in fact running Zotero 2.1.3, and not an unstable alpha release.
The current trunk builds (not even alpha) are indeed being called 3.0a1.rxxxx, probably because the team plans on calling the next major release 3.0. But that's just judging from the numbering -- they could still decide to release a version called 2.2.
OK, 2.1.4 is up with a correct version number. We'll be pushing a build for users on the erroneous 3.0a1.r8887 build that will revert its own version number back to 2.1.4. Anyone affected can also just reinstall 2.1.4 manually from the Zotero home page.
OK, we've pushed a 3.0a2(2.1.4) to 3.0a1.r8887 users. That new build should change itself back to 2.1.4 after a restart of Firefox, and it will update normally from then on.

Sorry for the confusion.
